Hello, I'm Robert L. Smith, an Oscar® and 2x Grammy® winning, Emmy® nominated Producer, Engineer, and Mixer. After 35+ years of working with the biggest names in music, my résumé reads like a who’s who of pop music.

Sound and its many forms (Music, Field Recordings, Comedy, Talk Radio, Podcasts, Lectures, Machine Noises, etc) have been a fascination for me since I was a young boy. Recording the world around me, writing songs and skits, and manipulating sounds have held my attention for most of my life. I've played in bands since I was a young teen, and eventually found minor success and much satisfaction, when I moved to Minneapolis, MN in 2002 and dove into the music scene there. I eventually met my bandmates and we formed a band called Estate. As a member of Estate, I have toured, released albums, eps, and remixes, and placed/licensed dozens of tracks to various television programs, and even film. During this time in Estate, I also began my career and a professional postproduction broadcast mix engineer, sound designer, and composer. Tirering of the advertising world, I changed paths to focus on my family, spirituality, and sustainability. To this end, we sold everything in Mpls and moved our family to rural northwest MN. We now live on an old 40-acre dairy farm in the mystical Leaf Mountains in beautiful Ottertail County. Our two daughters, three cats, two dogs, 30 chickens, and our beloved forested hills, form a small but wonderful world that my wife and I enjoy immensely. Music remains an integral part of my life, identity, and income. I produce using Ableton live (user since 2004 v2 I believe), guitars, basses, synths, and of course a wide palette of VST instruments, VST effects, and other digital goodies. I am interested in collaborations, work-for-hire composition, remixing, sound design (the SFX kind, post-production style), game audio using Unreal Engine 5 and Gamemaker Studio, podcast production and editing, and all-around audio shenanigans. I am a multi-style cellist, composer, videographer, and photographer originally from New York now based in Nashville, TN. With two classical music degrees under my belt and a wealth of experience improvising and writing my own music, I feel pretty comfortable in most musical settings, especially the Americana genres. When I'm not in the studio, I'm on the road with Country singer-songwriter Brandy Clark pretending that I'm an entire string section with a huge pedal board. I also have my own band called Oliver the Crow (whom NPR called an “inspired collaboration") and a string quartet called the Atwood Quartet. I've got a solo album coming out this fall with all my own compositions (also recorded right in my home!). Besides these current gigs, I've collaborated with trumpeter and composer Frank London of the Klezmatics and North Indian classical music tabla player Shawn Mativetsky. My playing can be heard on albums by bluegrass guitar virtuoso Billy Strings, the Call of Duty video game series, as well as dozens more major motion picture soundtracks and albums. My former folk duo, Bride & Groom, toured Canada and America extensively, growing a sizable audience. I use my wealth of musical experience in inform her work with other musicians in the realms of photography and videography. I have produced visual works for Sarah Jarosz, Molly Tuttle, Jillette Johnson, and more. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate from Purchase College, State University of New York where I studied with Julia Lichten and a Master of Music degree from McGill University where I studied with Matt Haimovitz.

After obtaining a Bachelor's degree from McGill University, Ken pursued a full time music career. Starting with guitar performance for off-Broadway musicals in New York (NY) and in Montreal (QC), his career quickly gained traction. He continued performing on guitar, voice, percussion, keyboards and bass for many events such as: opening act for Mumford and Sons, Jazz Fest, 4 sold out Metropolis with the Franklin Electric, and Osheaga main stage. As a musician, in the last three years alone, he toured in over 18 countries with The Franklin Electric (Juno nominated), Patrick Lehman (Juno nominated), and others with roles in guitar, keys, vocals and bass. In addition to tours, he has performed across multiple nationally televised and broadcasted venues including: The Bachelorette Canada, ABC (national Australian radio), Canada AM, Radio Eins (Germany's premier radio), Qmusic (Danish T.V.), and Inas Nacht (German television with over 3 million viewers). Beyond performance, Ken has arranged (bass and guitar) on many records including Patrick Lehman's 'Buthcy's Son' (Juno nominated) and The Franklin Electric's 'Blue Ceilings'; 'In Your Head', and 'In Your Heart’. This initial experience has motivated a deeper commitment toward writing and arrangement for artists across North America across a range a styles that go beyond Ken’s original experience in country music. In particular, these genres now include folk, indie, pop and rock artists. Ken directly attributes this versatility in style to the successful production since 2018 alone of E.P.’s and singles for Velvet Black, Allison Fortier, Emilie Skahan, Lia, Delta Creek and many other Canadian and American artists.

With 30+ years in the business, working for and collaborating with a multitude of commercially successful artists, producers, DJs, film composers and advertising agencies, I am always looking for fresh projects that challenge my audiophile mind. In my own studio, I usually write & produce in Ableton Live, and record, mix and master in ProTools. Happy in either environment, I sometimes use both concurrently via Rewire. I did a *lot* of remixing in the 90s and 00s, and still enjoy doing so. Leftfield and experimental sound design have always been favourites of mine, as well as composing to picture. Composition for TV advertising in New York, and collaboration on a number of feature films with the named composers brought plenty of sound to picture experience, and I taught Audio Post Production at Full Sail, Orlando. Donovan Christopher Knight, better known as D.K. the Punisher, is a multi-platinum producer from Baltimore, MD, perhaps best known for his work with TDE signees SiR, Jay Rock, and Isaiah Rashad. He has also produced records for Justin Bieber, Anderson .Paak, Jill Scott, Ro James, Mac Miller, EARTHGANG, Little Simz, and the list goes on.

I've been playing flute since 1997. I have several degrees in music performance, and I have recorded on countless projects. I've performed in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Ottawa and Montreal's Jazz festivals, and the Marciac Jazz festival. I have a lot of experience in knowing in the moment what a song might need, and being able to come up with new ideas that suit the vibe of the song. I came up learning heavy metal and classic rock guitar solos on the flute, and kept working with that and eventually switched to jazz, with a focus in improvisation. I also learned the sax shortly after, and I am able to play tenor, alto, soprano and Baritone, even at the same time!! I've studied with some of the best saxophonists in the world, including David Binney, George Garzone, Donny McCaslin and Dave Liebman. I also play clarinet, keyboards and percussion. I came up in a rich musical background so I am able to perform and interpret in many different styles, from pop to rock, to reggae, to jazz, to hip hop to even techno. I love playing different styles and fusing them together. I'm looking forward to being able to work together and recording on your tracks!!!
