With an eclectic mix of genre, and distinct vocals, my music will take you on a journey of imagination. I am a multi-instrumentalist, playing Trumpet, Saxophone, Percussion, Bass, Piano, Ukulele and Guitar. My sound has been described as a mix between Hozier, Sufjan Stevens, and a young Leonard Cohen. I go under the name Scalawag, and I will be sure to both make you nostalgic for things you've never experienced, and keep your head bopping and your torso grooving. I grew up in the small town of Smithers, B.C. in a very artistic household: my Mother, a painter, writer, and magazine publisher; my dad, a graphic designer, set designer and guitarist/singer. From an early age, I was exposed to live music, attending concerts and music festivals around northern B.C. I started playing music when I received my first guitar at age 7 and continued throughout elementary and high school where I played tenor saxophone and trumpet in several school bands, and sang in the jazz and choral choirs. My career in music began the year after I graduated high school when I and long time friend, Zak Windle, started writing music together under the name Ranger Smash. We co-produced and released our first 10-track album together in June, 2016. During this time, I was also attending the conservatory acting program at Studio 58 in Vancouver where I honed my crooneresque style, and developed my vocal technique. After graduating, I went on to write, record and self-produce my first solo album under the name Scalawag, released in March, 2019, during my Album release tour. More recently, I released two singles “Touch” in late 2020, getting tagged “The silky smooth articulation…We are in love!” By Tonemill, and garnering a 90% score on Submithub. My subsequent single “You On My Mind,” released in February 2021 to critical acclaim "Scalawag soothes your spirit while filling you with the warm blossoming energy of falling in love" -The Other Side Reviews. "The atmospheric elements of this track really set it apart in a crowded folk scene right now." -Ear to the Ground.

After obtaining a Bachelor's degree from McGill University, Ken pursued a full time music career. Starting with guitar performance for off-Broadway musicals in New York (NY) and in Montreal (QC), his career quickly gained traction. He continued performing on guitar, voice, percussion, keyboards and bass for many events such as: opening act for Mumford and Sons, Jazz Fest, 4 sold out Metropolis with the Franklin Electric, and Osheaga main stage. As a musician, in the last three years alone, he toured in over 18 countries with The Franklin Electric (Juno nominated), Patrick Lehman (Juno nominated), and others with roles in guitar, keys, vocals and bass. In addition to tours, he has performed across multiple nationally televised and broadcasted venues including: The Bachelorette Canada, ABC (national Australian radio), Canada AM, Radio Eins (Germany's premier radio), Qmusic (Danish T.V.), and Inas Nacht (German television with over 3 million viewers). Beyond performance, Ken has arranged (bass and guitar) on many records including Patrick Lehman's 'Buthcy's Son' (Juno nominated) and The Franklin Electric's 'Blue Ceilings'; 'In Your Head', and 'In Your Heart’. This initial experience has motivated a deeper commitment toward writing and arrangement for artists across North America across a range a styles that go beyond Ken’s original experience in country music. In particular, these genres now include folk, indie, pop and rock artists. Ken directly attributes this versatility in style to the successful production since 2018 alone of E.P.’s and singles for Velvet Black, Allison Fortier, Emilie Skahan, Lia, Delta Creek and many other Canadian and American artists.

I spent the first 10 years of my career working at a studio privately run by dance/rock pioneers Apollo 440 in London. Now working freelance, I draw on all the knowledge and experience I gained working with countless singers/bands/artists/producers (both established and new) on all sorts of different projects. Mixing is not simply a technical procedure, it's a creative process. You can get a song sounding good a million different ways using all kinds of techniques but does it make the listener feel the way it's supposed to? I am a perfectionist. Even when I know "perfect" isn't something that's actually possible most of the time, that doesn't stop me striving to achieve that for myself and more importantly the artist I'm mixing music for. If that means working on a track for a while, deciding it's not working and starting again with a new approach..then I'm not afraid to do that. www.akmix.co.uk

Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based guitarist, producer, and beatmaker. My influences and styles are vast, ranging from jazz, hip-hop, blues, folk, rock, funk, soul and electronic music. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from McGill University. I’ve worked, toured, performed, written and recorded with numerous artists such as Lauryn Hill, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jon Batiste, The Weeknd, NAS, Billy Porter, Quiñ, The Roots, Andra Day, Antonio Sanchez, Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, and Bokanté. In 2015, I collaborated with Brooklyn native singer/flutist Melanie Charles on a project called “Rat Habitat”; a mix of electro/soul/indie rock. Our co-produced EP "Guns That Shoot Bubbles" was released in May of 2015, and has gotten many powerful reviews on internationally recognized online blogs such as Okayplayer, AfroPunk, Soulbounce and Ebony. Past production releases include Canadian songstress Sarah MK’s album “Worth It” which received the “Editors Pick” at the 2011 world renown “Montreal International Jazz Festival” My debut release as a leader, entitled “Dreams”, is a tapestry of colors and moods; a blend of electronic/indie/beat/jazz influences. The album showcases my skills as a producer and beatmaker, and while not a guitar heavy featured project, manages to fuse many of my musical influences into one cohesive sonic vision. The album features several New York City musicians, notably veteran drummer Obed Calvaire, vocalist Mike “Maz” Maher, woodwind genius Sly5Ave, violinist Lisanne Tremblay, drummer David Frasier and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Fischer.

Matt Gerhard is a Producer/Engineer/Multi-Instrumentalist based in Austin, TX. Matt is the Co-Owner of Hen House Recording and the Staff Engineer at Public Hi-Fi Studios. Over the past decade I have had the pleasure to work with artists like Spoon, !!!, Tennis, Future Islands, and Knife in The Water. As well as many leading producers including Jim Eno, Joe Chiccarelli, Charlie Sexton, Steve Berlin, Jack Lawrence, and Rick Hart. Q&A Q: Analog or digital and why? A: Most mixing projects lately are a combo of the two. I mix in the box and print outboard gear and effects. Then the mix is printed through my API 8200 summing mixer. I would love to do more all analog tape sessions, because it's a fun and different workflow but realistically the budgets and time constraints are limited. Q: What do you like most about your job? A: Getting to work with all kinds of people and personalities in many different styles of music. I think that really keeps me fresh. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do? A: That mixing and mastering is magic and everything can be fixed. Don't get me wrong a lot can be fixed, but there is no substitute for great source material. The job of mixing and mastering is to enhance the song. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients? A: What direction do you want the mix to go? On a 1-10 scale, 1 being pretty close to the rough mix but a little more polished/hi-fi or 10 pretty unrecognizable from the rough mix? Q: Can you share one music production tip? A: Listen! Be fearless and experiment. Turn that delay all the way up maybe it'll work, maybe it won't? You don't know unless you try. Also don't be afraid to kill your darlings. Q: What type of music do you usually work on? A: All kinds, thats my favorite part of the job Q: What do you bring to a song? A: Fresh ears and a new perspective Q: What's your typical work process? A: For mixing, I try to learn as much about the song as I can. I have a detailed conversation with the artist and try and get an idea of the vision for the song before I start. A rough mix is always helpful I listen to that a couple of times and right down my ideas and notes. Once I feel like I'm at a got place with the mix I'll send it to the artist for notes and then revise based on any notes they have until they're happy with the mix. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you? A: Oh boy, lots of people. I really love people like Tchad Blake and Dave Fridmann who are making wild sounds you've never heard before. As well as folks who came up more in the "documentarian" engineering world. People like Sam Phillips, Tom Dowd, Steve Albini who are trying to capture the performance in the room. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients. A: Mixing, Mastering, Editing.

Hi, I'm a multi-instrumentalist, producer, audio recording, video guy. A new breed you've likely seen on Instagram. Someone who - for whatever reason - is most interested in having their hands in every musical pie. Right now I am interested in mixing. Specifically mixing for people who like my sound - a wide, aggressive, upfront sound that you find with Tchad Blake, Andrew Sarlo, Eric Valentine, and many others. I want to have my cake and eat it too - contemporary mixes that are equal parts technically solid and vibey. Reach out to me if you want to have a conversation about your music career, you need a mix done or you want to help you write, record & mix your own material better. Jesse
