My first exposure to live music was listening to my Aunt Corrine play guitar and sing on my family’s annual vacations in Georgia. I joined a band at age 12, playing with neighborhood kids, and I’ve never looked back. My mentor gave me a guitar for my 16th birthday, and I wrote my first song that fall. I continued to write and perform for many years, but there was no outlet for my originals in the bar bands I played with until one fateful day in 1979. When I joined the Cadillac Kidz that year, I wasn’t that into the punk music that inspired the band. They did originals, though, and I liked that! And, as we became better writers and musicians, we evolved — keeping our edge while creating a new, bold, more accessible sound. As a result, I was able to contribute to our original song list and our shared goal of hitting’ the big time.
