I'm an engineer, drummer and percussionist who's worked with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and The National Art Center Orchestra, Capital Brass Works, along with many other bands and ensembles. I made the move to Montreal as a drummer and audio engineer in 2011 and became a full-time freelancer. I've toured extensively throughout 2013, and since returning to Montreal I've been working mainly as a recording and mixing engineer. I had a chance to work on 2 Felix winning albums, with Alex Desilets, Windigo and Laurence Jalbert, Ma Route, and was recently recording engineer for the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award-nominated album Hapax, by the band Oktopus (who I now play drums with). As for the genre of music that I work on, I don't necessarily decide that for myself, but it gets determined by the projects I get hired to work on. I like music that's been well-honed, and the importance of the genre for me is secondary to that. I find the music itself tells me where to take the sound, and by having good communication with the artist/s we can make sure we're thinking along the same lines, plus I get to learn what the artist hears/has in mind. When I do work on a new genre, I like to find new tricks that associate with that genre, but I also have a bag of my own tricks that I can bring to the table, which helps me bring a different light to a common sound.

I’ve worked for more than three decades in the arts, as a musician, an educator, an author and an artist. I’ve worked on three records nominated for Juno awards; published multiple books with Bloomsbury and Oxford University Press, among other notable imprints, on the subject of popular music and record making, one of which currently resides in the Reading Room of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and I even won a Governor General's medal in 2006, at only 28 years of age, for my PhD research in the area of record production and media ecology. Since then I’ve been an associate professor of popular music studies at Western University, in London (Ontario), teaching primarily songwriting and project paradigm record production. Dimitri Arnauts (°1973) is a composer who has dedicated himself to uplift and delight hearts, souls and minds through the reaffirmed beauty of melody, harmony, polyphony and counterpoint, and through the innumerable colors of instruments and human voices. He has written numerous works of various sizes and settings, being mainly cantatas, psalms, oratorios, concertos, symphonies and symphonic poems, and other vocal or orchestral works. As an autodidact, Dimitri feels free to follow the paths of his heart, both in the aesthetics of his music as in the emotion and message it aims to convey. He does his work to the best of his abilities, in recognition of received graces and gifts, having nothing in sight but the elevation of the spirit, the delight of the soul and the enchantment of the heart. With 30+ years in the business, working for and collaborating with a multitude of commercially successful artists, producers, DJs, film composers and advertising agencies, I am always looking for fresh projects that challenge my audiophile mind. In my own studio, I usually write & produce in Ableton Live, and record, mix and master in ProTools. Happy in either environment, I sometimes use both concurrently via Rewire. I did a *lot* of remixing in the 90s and 00s, and still enjoy doing so. Leftfield and experimental sound design have always been favourites of mine, as well as composing to picture. Composition for TV advertising in New York, and collaboration on a number of feature films with the named composers brought plenty of sound to picture experience, and I taught Audio Post Production at Full Sail, Orlando. I've been playing flute since 1997. I have several degrees in music performance, and I have recorded on countless projects. I've performed in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Ottawa and Montreal's Jazz festivals, and the Marciac Jazz festival. I have a lot of experience in knowing in the moment what a song might need, and being able to come up with new ideas that suit the vibe of the song. I came up learning heavy metal and classic rock guitar solos on the flute, and kept working with that and eventually switched to jazz, with a focus in improvisation. I also learned the sax shortly after, and I am able to play tenor, alto, soprano and Baritone, even at the same time!! I've studied with some of the best saxophonists in the world, including David Binney, George Garzone, Donny McCaslin and Dave Liebman. I also play clarinet, keyboards and percussion. I came up in a rich musical background so I am able to perform and interpret in many different styles, from pop to rock, to reggae, to jazz, to hip hop to even techno. I love playing different styles and fusing them together. I'm looking forward to being able to work together and recording on your tracks!!!

A: Most mixing projects lately are a combo of the two. I mix in the box and print outboard gear and effects. Then the mix is printed through my API 8200 summing mixer. I would love to do more all analog tape sessions, because it's a fun and different workflow but realistically the budgets and time constraints are limited. Q: What do you like most about your job? A: Getting to work with all kinds of people and personalities in many different styles of music. I think that really keeps me fresh. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do? A: That mixing and mastering is magic and everything can be fixed. Don't get me wrong a lot can be fixed, but there is no substitute for great source material. The job of mixing and mastering is to enhance the song. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients? A: What direction do you want the mix to go? On a 1-10 scale, 1 being pretty close to the rough mix but a little more polished/hi-fi or 10 pretty unrecognizable from the rough mix? Q: Can you share one music production tip? A: Listen! Be fearless and experiment. Turn that delay all the way up maybe it'll work, maybe it won't? You don't know unless you try. Also don't be afraid to kill your darlings. Q: What type of music do you usually work on? A: All kinds, thats my favorite part of the job Q: What do you bring to a song? A: Fresh ears and a new perspective Q: What's your typical work process? A: For mixing, I try to learn as much about the song as I can. I have a detailed conversation with the artist and try and get an idea of the vision for the song before I start. A rough mix is always helpful I listen to that a couple of times and right down my ideas and notes. Once I feel like I'm at a got place with the mix I'll send it to the artist for notes and then revise based on any notes they have until they're happy with the mix. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you? A: Oh boy, lots of people. I really love people like Tchad Blake and Dave Fridmann who are making wild sounds you've never heard before. As well as folks who came up more in the "documentarian" engineering world. People like Sam Phillips, Tom Dowd, Steve Albini who are trying to capture the performance in the room. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients. A: Mixing, Mastering, Editing.
